my sister-in-law (who just turned 34) was having breast pains. She went to her dr to have it checked out. Her doctor sent her to a surgeon to have it diagnosed. The surgeon performed the biopsy the other day, and they already have the results. She had the surgeon on the phone the other day, but he said that he couldn't tell her the results over the phone and she would have to come in next week. My question is: is that normal. Are doctors not allowed to give the results over the phone, or is this a sign that something was wrong with the diagnosis? This is really worrying her and me. Please help!

I had this too myself. Well actually, it was my husband. Apparently doctors (in the US) aren't allowed to give out information over the telephone, because they have no way of verifying who they are talking with. It has to do with the HIPPA law I believe (or something like that:)).

My husband had a similar situation when he went in to get his prostaat checked. The doctor couldn't tell him the results over the phone. On the one hand I can see how this law protects patients, but on the other hand, it just creates more worries and stress.
